Festivals and events are moving away from physical money, as we have seen by cashless bars and preloaded event cards, but now it’s time for cryptocurrency to shine.

As of August 6th, 2022, the Oxford City Football Club will be accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for tickets, food, drinks, and team gadgets. This news comes to light as CoinCorner and Oxford City FC partner. CoinCorner is an Isle of Man based award-winning exchange with users globally. CoinCorner encourages users to make payments with ‘The Bolt Card’, their Lightning Network-enabled contactless Bitcoin card.

“It’s exciting to see the club become the first adopters of bitcoin payments in the National League. We believe this move will set a trend across Non-League and Football League divisions as digital currency establishes itself as the new normal for sports fans and event goers across the UK.”

Danny Scott, CEO of CoinCorner

This partnership will foresee a back-of-shirt sponsor placement as well. Oxford City FC is a sixth tier semi-pro team in England, and the payment stunt is set to take off at the opening of the National League South fixture. The match will be taking place at the RAW Charging Stadium against Eastbourne Borough FC on the 6th of August, 2022.

“It’s a real eye-opener understanding how significant and accepted Bitcoin is in the modern, digital, age. As a football club, we are constantly striving to develop and improve our overall customer experience which is why our partnership with CoinCorner is so important to us.”

Justin Merritt, Director of Oxford City FC

This is not the first time we have seen sports and cryptocurrency collide. Just in English football alone, Manchester United’s secured a £20 million-a-year deal with the reputable Tezos. We also saw NBA superstars, Los Angeles Lakers, sign a $700 million arena-naming rights contract with Crypto.com. It’s exciting to see another sport and crypto partnership hit our screens, as we have already seen sports betting embrace cryptocurrency.
